About Currents 2016
Currents is the annual technical symposium of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of NIT Tiruchirappalli, or quite simply, The Trical Department. Students of Electrical, Electronics, Communication and Instrumentation Engineering and Diploma Courses from all colleges are welcomed to participate in Currents ‘16!
Currents was first incepted in 1990s as a humble affair, by a group of enthusiastic members of the EEE Association. Recent editions have seen the event grow exponentially, with the latest edition bearing witness to this fact, recording an unheralded footfall of over a thousand participants.
Conveniently scheduled during the more relaxed days of a sapping and long Even Semester – February 18 - 21, Currents provides the perfect platform to showcase technical acumen, compete with peers and most important of all, imbibe inspiration. It has on offer, a plethora of innovative events, state-of-the-art workshops and the best guest lectures from the most revered academicians and industrialists.
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Autonomous Robots | Currents Workshops
A unique workshop which is intended to provide one basic knowledge of electronics, microcontrollers, autonomous control strategies, theory of robots and the mechanics involved. Participants will also be introduced to advanced programming concepts and methods to interface sensor they will finally be able to use all these in order to assemble a robot. The kit provided to each team of maximum three will consist of a robot chasses, two 12V DC motors, a arduino microcontroller, etc. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 3
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Rapid Prototyping And Design | Currents Workshops
3D printing - one of the latest technologies of the twenty-first century with the potency to be used across various fields of engineering, medicine, etc. Is predicted to help in the betterment of millions of lives. Currents '16 offers you with an one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn the basics of design principles and prototyping techniques which can be employed to design a 3D prototype. Participants will then be provided with the choice to print out their models at our state-of-the-art 3D printing facility for a nominal fee.
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Image Processing | Currents Workshops
A workshop designed for a team of two in which each team will be given a high quality webcam and the opencv software. By the end of this workshop, each participant will have gained the ability to use the image processing tools in opencv and how to use these for colour recognition and contour as well as edge detection. They would also be equipped with the knowledge of implementing image processing techniques for identification of the geometrical properties of regularly and irregularly shaped objects which can ultimately be used for face detection and histogram equalization. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 2
Thursday | February 18th | 2016FPGA | Currents Workshops
This workshop is aimed to provide one with knowledge of basic digital electronics, encoding and decoding tasks using HDL as well as the ability to implement digital blocks and processor blocks in the hardware. Participants will also learn methods of interfacing external memory and applying file access. A team of maximum three will be accepted and each will be provided with a FPGA board and a data cable. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 3
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Solar Technology And Design Of Power Converter | Currents Workshops
Solar technology is widely believed to be the future of power generation in order to face the need of the hour. Currents '16 brings you an extremely educational workshop where one would be introduced to PV technology, taught the basics of power converters and how to design the same using matlab simulink software. Participants must appear as teams of three and they will each be given an instructive tour of grid connected PV arrays. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 3
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Li-Fi Technology | Currents Workshops
Li-Fi or light fidelity is the new phase of wireless communication technology and Currents'16 brings you an opportunity to fiddle with this latest invention. A workshop designed to equip you with the knowledge of basic Li-Fi technology and communication protocols as well as the use of the electronics and micro-controllers employed to implement the same. Participants will benefit from the hands-on experience given on the hardware design of a simple Li-Fi module and will learn to use this technology for data transfer. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 3
Thursday | February 18th | 2016Development Of Hand-writing Recognition Device | Currents Workshops
A truly novel kind of workshop in which one would be taught the basics of electronics, microcontrollers, sensor interfacing, how to use adc and dacs as well as the basics of serial communication. One will also be equipped with the knowledge on the means to develop a graphical user interface (gui). Participants will be provided with the necessary microcontroller, resistive touch screen, a stylus, a touch screen adapter and the various discrete electronics. NUMBER OF MEMBERS PER TEAM: 3
Thursday | February 18th | 2016PCB Design | Currents Workshops
Use of printed circuit boards is widespread across the electrical and electronics field and with this workshop one would be able to develop the required ability to manipulate the eagle pcb design software and to employ it for various applications. Participants will be taught the basics of circuit design, single and multi-layer design as well as the design principles required for surface mount devices.
