The field of "data science" is emerging at the intersection of the fields of social science and statistics, information and computer science, and design. It is a vast field which is primarily focused on making sense of the data you possess. It is the extraction of knowledge from data. It employs techniques and theories drawn from many areas of mathematics, statistics, information theory and information technology, including probability models, statistical learning, data engineering, pattern recognition, visualization, predictive analytics, data warehousing, data compression and high performance computing. Methods that scale to Big Data are of particular interest in data science, although the discipline is not generally considered to be restricted to such data.
